Belfast attractions, local Belfast attractions, County Antrim

Belfast Castle is one of the area’s main attractions for visitors. It was originally constructed back in 1870 on the slopes of Cave Hill, from which you can now see impressive views of the city below. The castle has undergone intensive restoration and is now home to a heritage centre and well worth a visit.

For a rather special evening out, how about booking tickets for a performance at Belfast ’s Grand Opera House? The programme of events encompasses theatre, ballet, comedy and pantomime, as well as opera. It’s a good idea to find out about purchasing tickets prior to your visit though, as popular performance can sell out quite early on.

A good location for a free day out that the whole family can take interest in, is Belfast City Hall . Located in the heart of the city this ornate Edwardian building, dating back to around 1900, is made from the finest Portland stone and the interior is exquisitely decorated. The building is now used by the council and is open Monday to Saturday for tours. Call 028 902 70456 for details of tour times.

In a city much loved for its parks and green open spaces, one of the most popular gardens is the Botanic Gardens. Housed in an impressive glass and iron Victorian palm house that dates back to around the 1840’s are a variety of spectacular exotic plants and tropical blooms. The surrounding gardens are also very picturesque, especially the rose garden and makes for a great place to enjoy a relaxing picnic.

For loads of entertainment packed into just a single location, get down to the Odyssey on Queen’s Quay. Here you’ll find a combination of facilities built as the Landmark Millennium Project for Northern Ireland including a 14-screen cinema, a selection of bars and restaurants, the W5 Interactive Discovery Centre and the main attraction, the Arena which is a new venue for concerts and various events, as well as being home to the Belfast Giants ice hockey team.
